Okay, here’s a tough one: Is the concept of sin still relevant in today’s society?

It depends on what your “concept” of sin is. I’ve been told there are several words in the Bible that are all translated into English as “sin” — losing the nuances along the way. I work with this definition: Anything that separates us from God. Is that important today? I would argue “yes, but”.

And yet, a focus on sin is a focus on the negative. It tells us what’s wrong, but doesn’t tell us “what right in the world” — as the guy said in the National Geographic video we saw a few years ago. A focus on sin may point out how we fall short of the mark, but it doesn’t model a better way. And an obsessive focus on sin is a good way to unleash depression. So instead, try this: “Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” (Philippians 4:8)
